Backpacking the Canadian Rockies West Coast Trail

Touring the West Coast Trail (WCT) is part of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and is located on Vancouver Island along the Pacific Ocean, between Port Renfrew and Bamfield, BC. This tour trail is part of our national park service, and the WCT has often been called Canada's most difficult touring trek. Although only 75km (47 miles) long, the trail is both challenging and rewarding. The route follows an array of boardwalks, cable cars, bridges, and creek crossings past old ship wrecks, waterfalls, caves, isolated beaches and sandstone cliffs.

Canada's West Coast Trail was originally built between 1900 and 1912 by the Department of Marine to help the victims of one of the many shipwrecks along the rugged Canadian coast line. The tour trail was deceivingly called the "West Coast Life Saving Road", since it was far from the luxury of a "road".

The tour route is over rugged, uneven and often muddy ground. As such, British Columbia's WCT is best suited for experienced hikers and trekkers. The annual rainfall for the area is over 300 cm (120in.), so good sturdy leather boots and raingear is mandatory.

Canada's West Coast Trail is for hikers who are:

  • Able to walk long distances through rough rocky terrain with a heavy pack.


  • Prepared to have an isolated wilderness experience and adhere to low impact backcountry camping policies.


The West Coast Rockies Trail should not be considered by:

  • Children under twelve;


  • Hikers with little experience in multi-day backpacking trips;


  • Those with little stamina or recurring knee, back ,ankle injuries, or any physically affective medical conditions.
