Bicycling Tours in the Canadian Rockies

Bicycle touring is a very popular activity in the Canadian Rockies due to breathtaking scenery and hundreds of miles of paved and well-shouldered highways. Two short tours in particular are considered classics: the Golden Triangle, and the Icefields Parkway.

The Golden Triangle is a 282 km (175 mi) circle tour that passes through three national parks, two provinces and crosses the continental divide twice. The route uses Highway 1 (TransCanada Highway), BC Highway 95 and the Kootenay Parkway to make a triangular circuit that typically requires three days and has some exceptional climbing. It can be ridden clockwise or counter-clockwise, beginning at Banff, Castle Junction, Lake Louise, Golden or Radium. The Golden Triangle is ideal for cyclists that want to sleep in style due to the proximity of major tourist towns and their excellent lodging infrastructure.

Wide shoulders, spectacular scenery and many campgrounds and hostels combine to make the Icefields Parkway one of the best cycle touring roads in the world. Three to five days suffice for a one-way trip with some unavoidable sightseeing while en route between Jasper and Lake Louise. The hills are steeper but shorter if biked north to south. Arranging transportation at either end of the route will necessitate two vehicles, or bus travel. If you have the time, you can simplify transportation logistics by cycling the Icefields Parkway both ways.

The Jasper, Banff and Canmore townsites are well suited to exploration on bicycle. You may also want to consider an enjoyable day ride from Banff along the Bow Valley Parkway towards Lake Louise or through Kananaskis Country.
